چکیده

I. Eleven obese subjects fasted for 24 d, by which time their serum albumin concentration had fallen significantly. 1251-labelled albumin was injected on day 7 of fasting to allow study of albumin metabolism. 2. Although no significant alteration occurred in either the intravascular content or the absolute catabolic rate of albumin between days 7 and 24 of fasting, the mean values for both content and catabolic rate were significantly lower than values determined in eight normal subjects. 3. A corresponding fall occurred in the absolute ‘synthesis +transfer’ rate.

Effect of Short-Term Modified Alternate-Day Fasting on the Lipid Metabolism in Obese Women

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is a worldwide health problem, with increasing prevalence associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases. Decrease in energy intake has been shown to lower the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in obese. The common form of dietary restriction is daily calorie restriction (CR). Another form is alternate-day fasting (ADF). The ability of modified ADF to facilitate we...

Obesity and high blood pressure: a clinical phenotype for the insulin resistance syndrome in African Americans.

The high prevalence of insulin resistance syndrome in African Americans predisposes this population to higher morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease. To test the hypothesis that the combination of obesity and high blood pressure (BP) represents the physical phenotype of insulin resistance syndrome, 337 African-American men and women aged 32+/-4 years were examined and classified in...

Differential regulation of lipid and protein metabolism in obese vs. lean subjects before and after a 72-h fast.

Increased availability of lipids may conserve muscle protein during catabolic stress. Our study was designed to define 1) intracellular mechanisms leading to increased lipolysis and 2) whether this scenario is associated with decreased amino acid and urea fluxes, and decreased muscle amino acid release in obese subjects under basal and fasting conditions. We therefore studied nine lean and nine...

Effects of prolonged fasting on AMPK signaling, gene expression, and mitochondrial respiratory chain content in skeletal muscle from lean and obese individuals.

Obesity in humans is often associated with metabolic inflexibility, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood. The aim of the present study was to investigate how adaptation to prolonged fasting affects energy/nutrient-sensing pathways and metabolic gene expression in skeletal muscle from lean and obese individuals. Twelve lean and 14 nondiabetic obese subjects were...

High postprandial triglycerides serum levels: is obesity a good predictor?

The aim of this study was to analyze the correlation between triglyceride (TG) serum levels in obese and non-obese patients in a simulated postprandial state. Both groups showed TG levels < 150 mg/dL when fasting. After 12 h fasting, the subjects ingested a lipid overload diet and blood samples were collected. The variation between fasting and the postprandial TG peak levels were analyzed. The ...
